About the event
John Tavener’s austerely beautiful ‘Ikon of Light’ is an expression of uncreated light. Inspired by St Simeon’s Hymn to the Holy Spirit, this piece is infused with the music of Orthodox worship. The string music played by the Piatti Quartet represents the soul yearning for god, as the luminous choral writing expresses light and glory.
It is paired with a new commission by Anna Disley-Simpson, also imbued with yearning for light and a connection to ancient neolithic religion, depicting the shining of the setting sun on the winter solstice.
